I first became interested in chinchillas during an online 'pet finder' to find the most suitable pet for me. Chinchillas came up as my closest match, and from there I immediately began to research about these little furballs. In about three months time I had done enough research and saved up enough money to take the plunge into buying my first chinchilla. Her name was Nikki, I bought her from a petstore nearby and took her home, to her cage which had been setup earlier that week. She was a very quiet chinchilla at first and about three days later she was readily coming out onto my hand to run around. She became attached to me soon after, and would come out and run around, get treats and then fall asleep on my lap when we would go to watch TV.
I decided about a year later that I was ready for another chinchilla, having become readily attached to my Nikki and familiar with her daily routines and antics. So i went back on the internet and did more research. In doing my research I became interested in breeding my chinchilla. So I went around to all the petstores that sold chinchillas and I found one chinchilla that I thought was suitable for my Nikki. He was a pudgy little thing with a nice dark coat and a blocky build and longer fur. He was bred locally. I took him home and intorduced him to Nikki during a run around. They chased eachother around for about an hour, midge did lose a small tuft of fur, but soon after the agressiveness became fully playful and Nikki even invited Midge to stay in her cage. At this time I had an new cage that was fit for breeding and holding many animals. Those two hit it off very well and about 6 months later I had my first baby; a cute little pudge later named Angel(o). about 6 months after that I had my second litter, this time with three babies. It was in this litter that I found my little Faye.
Faye is my second breeding female. I kept her for her very tame personality, and her father's looks. She was kept with her mother and father for quite a while and helped her mother out with the next litter. She was then moved into another cage as the kits were weaned. when she was approaching a year old I started my search again for another chin, a colored mate for my Faye. I searched many breeders, and attempted to find the right travel accomodations for multiple chinchillas. However, I could not make the right arrangemants, and nearly gave up hope. About two months later I was making rounds at the petstores and found Cloud. I learned that he was bred in chicago, and was purchased by the owner's son. He was very tame and big and blocky. He is white with a few gray marks on him and a very pale, nearly gray beige spot on his back. I decided to purchase him within the next week. I brought him home and allowed him to settle in his cage, which I placed near faye's. They enjoyed being neighbors and were often found sitting near eachother in their separate cages. So i decided to let them run around with eachother, and Faye's parents. Nikki and Midge welcomed the new comer and readily played with him. However, Faye chased Cloud around and was agressive towards him. I was very dissapointed with this, but I didn't let it dampen my spirits. I began to switch their cages for about a week or so at a time and then increasingly smaller intervals, to get eachother accustomed to eachother's scents. When they did this without flipping out in eachother's cages i re introduced Cloud to Faye, this time in Faye's cage. There was a bit of chasing, and yelling and fur, but they settled down, and went to opposite sides of the cage. About two days later they were happily sitting with eachother and Cloud was even bold enough to groom her. Ever since then they've been making wonderful kits. However, cloud's relationship with the inlaws has worsened and they cannot even run around together.
It comes to me as no surprise that Faye and Cloud produce much tamer kits than Nikki and Midge. This only being because Cloud and Faye are tamer themselves, and Faye was handraised by me. Nikki and Midge produce great kits, and they are often as tame as Faye herself.
I love all of my chins, and to me they are pets before thay are 'breeding stock'. They get plenty of runaround time and are handled and socialized every day.
